“The Mother We Share,” the breakout single from Scottish trio Chvrches is still one of my all time favorite songs from the past few years. The stellar sound they crafted on their 2013 debut The Bones Of What You Believe is dreamy syth-pop at its very best, it simply cannot be touched.
Luckily for us, on “Leave A Trace,” the lead single from their eagerly anticipated follow-up Every Open Eye, they haven’t touched a thing — they’re just as dreamy as ever. The track combines their signature electro flare, sparkling synths and punchy percussion and effortlessly laces it with Lauren‘s delicate vocals, providing the perfect new addition to their ever growing synth-pop greatness collection.
“It’s the middle finger mic-drop. It’s about that point where you’re like, ‘There’s no point having this conversation anyways: There will be no resolve, I won’t feel better about it, you won’t feel better about it, no outcome from this will actually change my reality’,” vocalist Lauren Mayberry said in a statement. “It makes me feel better to write about that — I’ve done something constructive with it. You don’t put that on other people, you put that into what you do. That’s always the way I’ve written lyrics. My ex-partners are not friends with me, but I’m OK with that.”
