It’s not everyday that two of music’s biggest names team up to bring us a solid new anthem. Well that’s exactly what has happened with “Kings Never Die,” Eminem and Gwen Stefani‘s brand new single off the upcoming Southpaw movie soundtrack.
On the rock-edged hip-hop number, Em defends his rap crown and obliterates the competition with his rapid-fire rhymes (“It’d actually have to be a fuckin’ blowout to get me to retire / Tell these new artists that kings never die”), while the No Doubt diva delivers the anthemic hook: “Here to stay even when I’m gone/ When I close my eyes through the passage of time/ Kings never die.” It’s certainly not anything life-changing but I think it’s a solid cut that seems to make perfect sense for this particular flick. Did I expect better from these two? Yes. Is Gwen still a Queen? Yes. Will I watch Southpaw because Jake Gyllenhaal is shirtless the whole time? Yes.
