LIZ Dives Deeper Into Y2K Pop Nostalgia with ‘When I Rule The World’!

LIZ, the first lady of Mad Decent, is a name you’re going to want to get familiar with as we approach the end of 2015. After dropping her nostalgia-drenched Just Like You EP last year – one of my Top 10 EP’s of 2014 – the LA-based R&B-pop princess on the rise has been keeping busy touring with “Boom Clap” diva Charli XCX and spending some time in the studio cooking up a proper full-length debut.

This week, LIZ is back in a big way with the release of the music video for her new single “When I Rule The World“! The track, produced by Sophie, is a sugary sweet, dance-pop anthem packed with a wild array of bouncy basslines, glitchy blips and bleeps, hand claps, and repetitive hooks that bring the stuff of Gwen Stefani and Fergie to mind. It’s addictive, bubblegum-pop ear candy that you don’t want to love but can’t help it.

The video itself is one big frantic explosion of little-princess imagery that plays out like it’s homage to your typical K-pop video. I’m not totally in love with “When I Rule The World,” but I will say, it’s refreshing to see a new artist having this much fun straight out the gate.
